Wing Chun Curriculum

The following path and curriculum is relevant for in-person and online training.

PHASE 1 -
BOOT CAMP LEVEL

Wing Chun Boot Camp™ Curricum
OUR GOAL FOR YOU:
  • To help you understand Wing Chun’s Principles, concepts and tools through simple application.
  • Increase your coordination.
  • Introduce you to the basics of Qi Gong
  • Improve your conditioning.
CURRICULUM:

11 Classes.

The curriculum includes the Siu Lim Tao Form, emphasis on conditioning using correct musculature for proper Wing Chun training, lecture on Wing Chun principles and concepts such as centerline, relaxation, economy, facing, fighting zones etc., paired drilling in which students are introduced to 11 Methods of Defense and 6 Methods of Attack.  By the end of this level of training,  students will have developed excellent simultaneous attack and defense skills using these methods. Dan Chi Sau & Footwork are also introduced. An introduction to Qi Gong is practiced.

PHASE 2 -
SIU LIM TAO LEVEL

OUR GOAL FOR YOU:
  • Develop coordination of Wing Chun’s basic handwork and footwork, so that your motions are seemless against substantial predictable force and basic grappling.
  • Further conditioning of your body.
  • Develop Sensitivity of Touch.
  • Develop your Reflex.
  • Develop your Speed. 
  • Develop your Power.
  • Develop your Confidence.
  • Deepen Understanding of Principles and Concepts. 
  • Introduce and Encourage Free-Thinking.
CURRICULUM:

26 Classes. 6 Months to 1 1/2 Years 

The second phase, Siu Lim Tao level,  builds carefully on this three month foundation and is comprised of 26 specific classes that are meant to develop your skill and knowledge quickly and effectively in San Sik (Footwork and Handwork), Anti-Grappling, Ground Work, the Inside Line, Kick Defense, Sensitivity,  & Power Training using Wing Chun’s principles and concepts at their highest efficiency.  This will take a student anywhere from six months to a year and a half to complete.  All classes must be attended and students will be tested in proficiency for all 26 of the classes.  A student must also pass a written test to progress to the Chum Kiu level. 

PHASE 3 -
CHUM KIU LEVEL

OUR GOAL FOR YOU:
  • Develop Understanding of Additional Principles and Concepts contained w/in Chum Kiu Form/
  • Increase tool set.
  • Develop Strategy and Skill through Decreased Use of Memorized Drills.
  • Develop Coordination of Wing Chun’s intermediate Handwork, Footwork, Kicks, Bridging Skills, Reflex and Sensitivity against substantial predicted force.
CURRICULUM:

60 Classes. 2  to 4 1/2 Years 

The third phase, Chum Kiu level,  builds on all previous material.  While Siu Lim Tao focuses on the practitioner in relation to his/her opponent (body structure, coordination, positioning etc.), Chum Kiu focuses on controlling or destroying the structure of the opponent.  The curriculum emphasizes safely bridging (point of no contact to contact), Controlling and Trapping, and Attacking through Chin Na, Kicks, and more advanced Striking.  All classes must be attended and students will be formally tested in three levels for the total 60 classes.  A student must also pass a written test to progress to the Chum Kiu level. 

PHASE 4 -
BIL GEE LEVEL

OUR GOAL FOR YOU:
  • Further Refine and Increase Your Skill
  • Heavy Emphasis on Emergency/Recovery Ability
  • Develop the Expression of Full Energy and Power
  • Develop the Expression of Full Energy and Power through the Use of the Wooden Dummy
  • Develop Strategy that Focuses on Offensive Destruction of Opponent’s Structure
  • Develop Ability to COntrol Opponent in a Free-Fighting Situation
  • Prepare Students for Weapons Training

 Less Structured – 1 Year. 

The fourth phase is Biu Gee.  Biu Gee is much more circular in its approach in teaching.  There is heavy emphasis on free-thinking.  This phase of training is taught only to the most revered students, as these are the ones who are willing to do the work to earn it.  We encourage all of our students to stay focused and disciplined enough to make it this far.  We hope you become one of the ones who sees the system through to its completion.  Biu Gee will take a minimum of a year of training.

Passing on the Art

To Become a Sifu

To become a Sifu under Sifu Bryan Talbot will require 6-8 years of consistent training plus teacher training. Although Wing Chun is a very simple and direct art and takes only 2 years to become proficient, it takes a lifetime to master. Sifu’s under him must continue to train and learn, always seeking to improve their skill and understanding. To become a Sifu under Sifu Bryan is an achievement of great accumulated effort.
