WING CHUN CURRICULUM

ADULTS

ADULT WING CHUN

The West Coast Wing Chun Training Path

Adult Wing Chun students begin with Wing Chun Boot Camp™, the entry point into the complete West Coast Wing Chun curriculum. Boot Camp establishes the structure, movement, coordination, conditioning, and core principles students need before advancing into the traditional system. Training then progresses through Siu Lim Tao, Chum Kiu, Biu Gee, the Luk Dim Boon Kwan long pole, and Baat Jaam Do butterfly knives. Each phase builds on the last, developing a deeper understanding of Wing Chun Kung Fu through body mechanics, timing, power, sensitivity, application, and weapons training.

Every journey through the WCWC system begins with Wing Chun Boot Camp™. Find a certified school or instructor near you and take the first step.

PHASE 2

Beginning Wing Chun

Soft Palm Training at the Siu Lim Tao Level

What You'll Develop

  • Coordination of Wing Chun’s fundamental handwork and footwork so your movement remains smooth and controlled against substantial, predictable force and basic grappling.
  • Increased strength, conditioning, and physical readiness for more demanding training.
  • Sensitivity through touch and learn to recognize changes in pressure, direction, and intent.
  • Improved reflexes and your ability to respond without hesitation.
  • Increased speed while maintaining structure, accuracy, and control.
  • Power through efficient body mechanics rather than unnecessary tension.
  • Confidence through greater skill, understanding, and practical application.
  • A deeper understanding of Wing Chun principles and concepts and how they apply under pressure.
  • Independent thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt Wing Chun rather than simply imitate technique.

Siu Lim Tao Curriculum

27 Classes

Siu Lim Tao builds on the foundation established in Wing Chun Boot Camp™ through 27 focused classes designed to develop skill, understanding, and practical application quickly and effectively. Training expands into San Sik handwork and footwork, anti-grappling, groundwork, inside-line control, kick defense, sensitivity, and power development—
all taught through the principles and concepts of Wing Chun.

Students typically spend six months to a year and a half completing this phase, depending on training frequency and individual progress. All 26 classes must be completed, and students are tested for proficiency throughout the level. Advancement to Phase 3 — Chum Kiu requires successful completion of the Siu Lim Tao curriculum and a written examination.

PHASE 3

Intermediate Wing Chun

Chum Kiu Kick Defense
Kick Defense Class at the Chum Kiu Level

What You’ll Develop:

  • A deeper understanding of the principles and concepts contained within the Chum Kiu form.
  • Greater ability to control, compromise, and disrupt an opponent’s structure.
  • Safe and effective bridging from no contact into contact, with increased emphasis on controlling what happens once contact is made.
  • Stronger trapping, Chin Na, kicking, and intermediate striking skills.
  • Greater coordination of intermediate Wing Chun handwork, footwork, kicks, and bridging skills against substantial, predictable force.
  • Faster reflexes, increased sensitivity, and improved ability to respond to changes in pressure and direction.
  • The beginning of Wooden Dummy training, using the Mook Yan Jong to refine structure, positioning, power, and control.
  • Greater strategic independence through less reliance on memorized drills and more emphasis on applying Wing Chun principles to changing situations.

Chum Kiu Curriculum

60 Classes

Chum Kiu builds directly on everything developed in Wing Chun Boot Camp™ and Siu Lim Tao. While Siu Lim Tao focuses primarily on the practitioner’s own structure, coordination, positioning, and relationship to an opponent, Chum Kiu shifts the emphasis toward controlling, compromising, or destroying the opponent’s structure.

Training develops the ability to bridge safely from no contact into contact and then control what happens once that connection is made. The curriculum places strong emphasis on bridging, controlling and trapping, Chin Na, kicking, advanced striking, sensitivity, reflex, and the use of Wing Chun principles and concepts under increasing pressure.

The Chum Kiu curriculum is divided into three progressive levels comprising 60 classes in total. Students must complete the required classes and demonstrate proficiency through formal testing at each level. Advancement requires both practical competency and successful completion of a written examination before progressing to Phase 4 — Biu Gee.

PHASE 4

Advanced Wing Chun

Advanced Wooden Dummy Training in Biu Gee
Advanced Wooden Dummy Training at Biu Gee Level

What You’ll Develop:

  • Further refinement of your Wing Chun skill, timing, coordination, and application.
  • Strong emergency and recovery skills for situations where structure, position, or control has been compromised.
  • The ability to express full-body energy and power efficiently through Wing Chun mechanics.
  • Greater expression of power, structure, and application through Wooden Dummy training.
  • Offensive strategy focused on disrupting, controlling, and destroying an opponent’s structure.
  • The ability to control an opponent in increasingly free and unpredictable fighting situations.
  • The skill, structure, coordination, and understanding needed to prepare for Wing Chun weapons training.

Biu Gee Curriculum

Biu Gee marks a major shift in the West Coast Wing Chun curriculum. The training becomes more circular, adaptive, and less dependent on fixed patterns. There is a strong emphasis on free-thinking, recovery, advanced power, and the ability to apply Wing Chun principles under increasingly unpredictable conditions.

Biu Gee is taught only to students who have demonstrated the discipline, consistency, skill, and commitment required to earn their place at this stage of the system. Reaching this level represents more than time spent training—it reflects a willingness to continue refining the work when the material becomes more demanding.

Students should expect to spend a minimum of one year at the Biu Gee level. We encourage every student to remain focused enough to reach this phase and continue through the complete West Coast Wing Chun system.

PHASE 5

6 1/2 Point Long Pole

Wing Chun Long Pole
Long Pole Training

What You’ll Develop:

  • Whole-body power through the structure, mechanics, and coordinated movement of the Luk Dim Boon Kwan.
  • Increased strength, stability, endurance, and control through traditional 6½ Point Long Pole training.<
  • An exploration of long-range weapons strategy—how distance, timing, positioning, and reach are used offensively and defensively, and how those strategies apply to the Wing Chun system.

Luk Dim Boon Kwan Curriculum

Luk Dim Boon Kwan training centers on the form and 18 lessons designed to develop an understanding of the application of the 6½ movements and energies of the Long Pole. Students explore how each movement functions, how the energies are expressed, and how they are applied within the weapon system.

Advancement is based on demonstrated technical and functional ability, rather than simply completing a set number of classes.

PHASE 6

Butterfly Knives

Sifu Kim Squiers deomonstrating Bot Cham Do

What You’ll Develop:

  • Whole-body power through the structure, mechanics, and coordinated movement of the Luk Dim Boon Kwan.
  • Increased strength, stability, endurance, and control through traditional 6½ Point Long Pole training.
  • An exploration of long-range weapons strategy—how distance, timing, positioning, and reach are used offensively and defensively, and how those strategies apply to the Wing Chun system.

Bot Cham Do Curriculum

Bot Jaam Do training begins with learning the form and the functional application of its movements. The curriculum is based on developing a comprehension of the Eight Ways to Slash and understanding how each is used functionally.

As students progress, the emphasis moves from correct form and energy to functional application and technical control. Advancement is based on demonstrated aptitude, proper energy, and functional technical ability.
